5 Tips to Having an Effective Job Interview

Getting called back for an interview for a position that you’ve applied for is no small feat.  So, yes be excited, be proud of yourself, but most importantly be prepared.  Regardless of your level of education and job skills, you must be prepared in order to have an effective interview.  The 5 tips to having an effective interview are, understand the position you are applying for, learn about the company, practice for the interview, dress professionally and be confident.
Understand the Position
Learn as much as you can about the position you are applying for.  Read and familiarize yourself with the job description.  It’s really important that you understand the position and the essential functions that you will be required to perform.  During your interview, this will assist you in effectively highlighting the education and skills you have, that are directly related to the position you are applying for.
Learn About the Company
In addition to knowing the job you’re applying for, it’s important to learn as much as you can about the hiring company.  Now-a-days almost every business or organization has a website which makes this task very easy.  Go to their website and read every page, if they have a blog read the most recent posts.  Search for the company on Google.com.  Read recent news articles and social media posts about the company. It is very common for interviewers to ask “What do you know about our company?” or “Why do you want to work here?”.  Taking a little time to understand what products and/or service they provide, their current events, and company culture will help you answer these questions with grace and ease.
Practice the Actual Interview
Furthermore, you must practice for your interview. It is a big mistake to let the actual interview be the first time you do it.  Practice, practice, practice.  Do the interview out loud by yourself and with a family member or friend as if it was the real thing.  The more you practice the less nervous and more confident you will be.  You can get a list of the most common interview questions on websites such as about.comand career-advice.monster.com.

Dress Professional
Giving off a professional first impression is important.  Interview clothing for men usually includes suits, slacks, sweaters, button collar shirts and ties; for women this usually includes suits, slacks, dresses and skirts that are not too short, sweaters, and blouses.   Make sure that what you wear is appropriate for the position and the company you are applying for.  Also make sure your hair, nails and overall appearance is neat and tidy.

Be Confident

It is very likely that only a small percentage of people who applied for the job actually got called back for an interview; if you were called back, you’ve earned your right to be confident.  Not cocky, but confident.  Don’t be afraid to sell yourself, now is your time to shine.  Share your education and skills, and how they are relevant to the position you are applying for.   Share your knowledge about the position and the company, and how you would benefit the company.  Here are some specific ways to demonstrate confidence during your interview:
  •  Introduce yourself with a firm handshake
  • Speak clearly and project your voice loud enough for your interviewer to easily hear you
  • Stand and sit with your back straight, shoulders back and head up
  •  Look at the interviewer when you are speaking; do not look at the floor or into space
  • Smile and be attentive during the entire interview
By following these 5 tips to having an effective interview, you will be on your way to landing your dream job. Good luck.
