Another ORT Externship Turns into a Career
For two years Melissa was unemployed and struggling to find a job. Her previous work experience consisted of cleaning houses and shipping and receiving in a warehouse. These were jobs Melissa was grateful to have, but ultimately not the profession she wanted to dedicate years of her life to.
When Melissa heard about the Associate of Applied Science Degree at Los Angeles ORT College, she was impelled to enroll in the Medical Office Management program. From this, she would learn medical terminology, medical billing and medical office procedures. The course also included an in-depth unit on Medical Assistant duties such as injection and phlebotomy training, which was Melissa’s favorite part of the course load. She credits a large part of the course’s success to her instructor, Ms. Claudia, “she is a great instructor,” Melissa fondly remembers. The entire community at ORT has been integral in Melissa’s new employment. “ORT helped me gain the knowledge I need to prepare for my new career,” she explains enthusiastically.
Melissa began the Medical Office Management Program in August of 2011 and just recently finished her externship this month. As is typical of ORT externships, Melissa stayed on with this company and is now an employee, running the front and back of their medical office. “I enjoy helping the patients and learning new procedures and I’m excited for all the new things I will learn along the way,” says Melissa of her new career. She urges other ORT students to, “learn as much as you can and study a lot and read, read, read!”
Los Angeles ORT congratulates Melissa on her accomplishments and wishes her all the best on the path to her future career advancements.
