Are Your Fears Stopping You From Pursuing Your Dreams?

Like so many others, Juan Hernandez was not sure what life had in store for him. He graduated from high school and had no clue what his next steps should be. Then he got a phone call that would change his life forever.

After speaking with an LA ORT representative, Juan decided to enroll in the Digital Media Associate Degree program. With this degree, he could pursue many different job opportunities such as graphic design, web design, or desktop publishing.

Juan was excited to start this next chapter of his life, but he was also more than a little apprehensive. “I knew I was entering a whole new world, one that I had never lived and been on before,” Juan said. Like most beginning LA ORT students, Juan had a lot of questions and fears. What would the classes be like? Would he be able to keep up with the workload? Would he make friends in his program?

Despite his fears, Juan started classes at LA ORT, and within just a few short weeks he felt completely at home. He found his peers to be “compassionate, upbeat, curious, respectful, and highly talented people.” At his graduation speech in April of 2015, Juan spoke to his fellow graduates about his optimism for the future:

“I believe we can overcome any obstacle. And we should because if we don’t we will be wasting our potential… We, the class of 2015, are a powerhouse of innovation and creativity. We will push boundaries to make this world a better place even in small ways. Always remember where you came from. And always remember where you are going.
Juan’s story is not an unusual one. Starting a new chapter of your life can be scary for anyone, but the important thing is to not let your fears get in your way. No matter what life throws at you, always remember to follow your dreams. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”
