Attempting to get a healthcare job is a catch 22. Most healthcare jobs require that you have experience. And yet, how do you get experience, if no one will hire you? It’s not as hard as you think. All you need is a little creativity.

  • Get a Healthcare Internship: If you’re studying healthcare, you’re going to already be pre-qualified for internships. Do some research of some organizations you think you might like to work for. Go to the student services department at your college and ask them to help place you in an internship.
  • Network at Healthcare Seminars: No matter which profession you work in, it’s all about who you know when it comes to getting your dream job. Organizations such as the American Medical Association and World Health Organization offer seminars yearly. Go to as many as you can and start making connections. Networking with those in your college and outside is very important. You never know who can help you reach your goal.
  • Try Different Healthcare Fields: The great thing about healthcare is that it’s plentiful and varied. If you can’t get a job in your first choice, try researching some other fields within healthcare that you think you’d like to work in. Healthcare administration, phlebotomy, pharmacy technician – your options are endless when it comes to healthcare. So try as many as you can, until you get the right fit. Being at a college where you can study and meet people in different fields is a great opportunity.

IT Jobs

Getting a job in IT presents the same challenges as working in healthcare. But again, if you work hard and have the right attitude, you’ll be able to work in any number of IT jobs that you choose.

  • Utilize College Placement Program: Most colleges in Los Angeles have placement programs to help their graduate students get work. If not, there may be a job board somewhere on campus. Contact your student advisory office and see what options are available to you.
  • Volunteer: Most non-profits, religious groups and charities will be more than happy to bring someone on board who is familiar with technology. They can’t afford to pay very many people lucrative salaries. So reach out to a few local organizations in your area, and see if they could use your services. You’ll gain valuable work experience, in a non-competitive, supportive environment.
  • Work Your Way in From Another Department: Who says you have to go the traditional route to get a job in IT? Let’s say you’ve been working 7 years in administration, but have been taking evening IT classes at a local college. Now, all of a sudden, the administration department needs to hire a knowledgeable IT person. What do you do? Go for it! The company is already familiar with you being a loyal employee. Technically you don’t have years of IT experience, but you may have years of experience in another department. Use that to your advantage.
