Objective

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Digital Media Degree is designed to prepare students as computer graphic designers and desktop publishers for the media business. Digital media degree students are encouraged to prepare themselves for the “real world” of electronic publishing. The students will learn design for newspaper and magazine layouts, flyers, and logos; scanning and editing photographs; as well as video editing and web design with animation. Digital media degree students learn two key web graphic programs: one for animation of text and object, and the other for web page creation. Students also learn to navigate the internet, use search engines, download documents, and create email accounts. Digital media degree students create a website which contains production from all modules. The computer lab has both Microsoft PCs and Macintosh computers for students to get cross-platform training. All through the course, students are guided through portfolio preparation, an important feature of the program, designed to provide clear evidence of the student’s job market skills. The program provides expanded knowledge and understanding of general education courses which are beneficial to the student’s interactions within their community and beyond.

Opportunities

Upon receiving the digital media degree, the (AAS) graduates are ready to assume the roles of graphic designers, desktop publishers, and web designers. This program qualifies the student for many different positions in the digital media and computer graphics market. In addition to their computer graphics skills, graduates can draw upon basic skills such as speed typing and word-processing. Graduates will be hirable by businesses providing computer graphics and desktop publishing services, advertising agencies, print shops and publishers of magazines, and web design for the general media. Graduates may also find that working as a freelancer has many rewards. Their skills at creating and implementing graphics for the World Wide Web will make them attractive to many prospective customers.

For admission to the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program, the students must have proof of high school graduation or equivalent, obtain a passing score on the school entrance exam and be interviewed by the Admissions Department.

Equipment

LA ORT digital media degree students are trained on the appropriate equipment consistent with the demands of the job market.

Program Length

This program may be offered in the morning, afternoon or evening sessions. The morning and afternoon sessions are taught 5 days per week for approximately 48 weeks of instruction. In the evening sessions, this program is taught 4 days per week for approximately 76 weeks of instruction. This is a 65-semester credit hour program with 1200 classroom hours.
