Hmayak was an ORT ESL (English as a Second Language) graduate and working as a messenger in Los Angeles, when he decided to make a change for the better. From his previous ESL classes, he had seen the opportunities that ORT had to offer and decided to take advantage of them. In June of 2011 he opted to enroll in the Accounting program, with the goal of starting a better career.
Hmayak found that his favorite part of the program was the course on business law, but he soon discovered that ORT covered topics outside traditional accounting that were immensely helpful to him in the future. “The class that I took wasn’t only about accounting. Related extensions about business law, GAAP regulations, taxation and of course employment preparation were very helpful.”
Although Hmayak graduated almost a year later in August of 2012, he didn’t wait until graduation to find a job. Instead he began working while still attending classes, starting his own dispatch and delivery business. Hmayak reports that he loves, “dealing with customers and vendors,” and his salary has increased by 300% since his days as a messenger. Due to this more comfortable salary, Hyamak has more funds to spend on traveling, a pastime he enjoys. He cites this new freedom to travel as one of the greatest benefits he has noticed since attending ORT. When asked what advice he would give to future students he writes, “Never lose the opportunity to learn more, and always take an effort to apply every little thing, that you know, to make your life better.”
