My whole world was turned upside down in 2008 when the entire housing market crashed and I was laid off from my job as an interior designer at Ethan Allen. I had loved my job but residential design depends on housing sales, and with the negative market shift there was no longer a place for me.
I grew up in Chicago but moved to Miami later on. There, I worked for the airlines for over 28 years before I attended interior design school in 2003 and started working for Ethan Allen. When I moved to Los Angeles, I decided I wanted to start my own business. I had a lot of experience behind me and I wanted to be my own boss. I choose ORT because I knew I could earn my degree in Digital Media quicker than other schools, and I was anxious to get started on my new career. I started the program in July of 2011, and by September of the following year I had my associate’s degree in Digital media/Graphic Design. I love all aspects of design, so from the start I loved the program, but my absolute favorite part was designing original graphic artwork.
Now I have achieved my dream of starting my own freelance design business, METAMORPHOSE DESIGNS, Inc. I am writing and doing all my own graphics on motivational books about raising children in faith based homes and I hope to have these books out on the shelves in fall of 2013. I am also fortunate enough to have started booking motivational speaking engagements, which is my ultimate dream job!
I am so happy that ORT helped me achieved one of my design goals. I love working for myself and this program allows me to use the skills and qualifications I learned at ORT. Being self-employed and having the job of my dreams is worth more than gold. For future students, I would let them know that ORT is a great launching pad, always further your education and master your skills!
