ORT’s Pharmacy Technician Program and What It Can Do for You
ORT’s Pharmacy Technician program was built on actual job performance expectations. Beginning with an orientation on typical pharmacy practices, students go on to learn complicated tasks like learning how to read and create prescription receipts, screen patients for accurate information, prepare medications, distribute supplies, purchase pharmaceuticals, control inventory methods, and more. By the end of the program, students will also be experts in insurance billing, payment collection, pharmacy data calculations, and federal and state regulations; meaning they’ll be ready to not only get a job in the pharmaceutical industry, they’ll be ready to excel.
This diagram highlights some of the major topics that are covered in ORT’s Pharmacy Technician program. As you can see, the program is comprised of ten separate but equal parts that work together to prepare students for success in the pharmaceutical industry. After learning everything from computer applications to core pharmacy topics and completing an externship in an actual pharmacy setting, students will find that their opportunities for jobs in the workforce have grown considerably.
Career opportunities for pharmacy technicians with the proper training could range from neighborhood drug stores and outpatient hospitals to clinics and places with long-term or managed care. There are even opportunities opening up in the field of online pharmaceuticals.
In this day and age, people are more concerned about their health and more aware of the products on the market. As these people come to the pharmacy expecting their questions to be answered, it’s important for the pharmacist and pharmacy technicians to have the proper information to satisfy these customers and provide good business.
Students who desire a healthy income and a recession proof industry should consider jobs as pharmacy technicians. With an aging baby boomer population and incredible advances being made in the areas of medicine and science, pharmaceuticals will continue to grow in significance and opportunity for the coming decades.
