What is CAD?
CAD stands for ‘computer-aided design,’ and is sometimes known as CADD, which is an acronym for ‘computer-aided design and drafting.’ The process this represents is the use of computer technology for design as well as design documentation. Traditional drafting methods required hand drawing and measurements for design, the introduction of these programs in the 1980s caused a significant change in many fields, such as architectural planning and design and aerospace design. The CAD software allows the user tools, which help them streamline design processes. Some of the other ways CAD can be used:
- Show objects in a traditional drafting form or is able to show graphics to demonstrate
- the overall finished product
- Can work with designs in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional forms- able to convey
- Curves, space, surfaces, and solids
- Design of buildings ranging from small-scale residences like houses, to large building like factories
- Design of machinery and tool
What Industries Use CAD?
After CAD was developed and introduced to companies, they realized that they could save time and money because the program reduced drafting times significantly. This meant that large departments in companies that were previously devoted to drafting became unnecessary, since the same amount of work could be performed by less people if using the CAD program. Even many colleges and universities have adopted some version of CAD to replace traditional tools like protractors. Some industries that a CAD-trained individual may find a career in:
- Architectural drafting
- Civil Drafting
- Electrical Drafting
- Electronics Drafting
- Entertainment Industry
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, a mere two years ago California was listed as being the country’s largest employer of civil, electrical, architectural and electronics drafters. It was also recognized as having the second largest number of mechanical drafters in the US. The US Department of Labor predicts that over the next several years the fields of architectural and civil drafting will grow steadily by over 9%, due to population growth and other factors. Also, taking a CAD course in Los Angeles has added benefits because of our location in California. The largest industry in LA is the entertainment industry, and CAD is used in numerous facets of this field. Special effects and computer animation both use the CAD program often, and even some manuals such as those made for advertising and technical areas are designed with CAD.
