Turning Life’s Downfalls into Advancement

Turning Life’s Downfalls into Advancement

Lay-offs feel like the end. Especially when we’re older, being let go from an employer can be a devastating blow. But when Marcia left her job, she took the news as a challenge and met it head on! She turned her time off into a time to grow and learn.

Marcia is head of the household and the main provider for her family, so she doesn’t take her decision to go back to school lightly. She knows that even with limited time in her day, she still can invest in her future. Thanks to a supportive partner and an engagement ring (congratulations, Marcia!), Marcia is determined to get the skills for a secure future.

When deciding to go back to school, Marcia had a lot of options. Why LA ORT? “I did my research and the decision was simple. LA ORT met my three top requirements: time, cost, and area of study. I found all three at LA ORT.”

Even with the commute from her home in Orange County, Marcia is saving time with LA ORT’s flexible schedule and classes. And she saves time even beyond the class schedule. LA ORT places students in externships. Externships are similar to internships but much easier on a busy mom’s schedule, like Marcia’s busy day. Designed to give students a burst of practical experience, Marcia can take advantage of externships in her field by visiting a physician or hospital administrator without the time commitment of an internship program.

The cost of going back to school at LA ORT is not only affordable, Marcia also found a way to have her studies sponsored with a federal grant. Many students can get financial aid either through LA ORT’s scholarship program or grants like the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

Marcia has 25 years of experience in the medical field so she decided to move into LA ORT’s Medical Office Management program and improve on the decades of experience she already has. The students in Medical Office Management learn the skills needed to work in the administrative offices of hospitals and healthcare institutions. For Marcia, school is a huge motivational booster for her and she is loving her classes and classmates as she walks the halls of the LA ORT campus.

“Don’t give up! Stay focused! Take it seriously! You will succeed!“ Marcia says this with so much energy and joy, you know it must be true. Her optimism is contagious.
